Andre Mitchell Obituary

Andre Raphael “Butta” Mitchell Sr., was born on April 25th, 1974, at Saint Elizabeth hospital in Brighton, MA to Christine Mitchell. Andre was employed as an Inspector, working for the MBTA Green-line for 24 years. During that time, he made many friends and acquaintances, and he was best known for his friendliness and being hospitable to new employees. Andre enjoyed his job, and he was known as a hard worker. Prior to being an inspector, he worked multiple jobs supporting his family. Before his long-lasting position with the MBTA he worked multiple jobs to support his family. A lot of people know it was hard for him to say no to picking up shifts and doing overtime.

Andre loved cars, food, music, and cinema. In the early 1990s, he started working on his mother's 1973 Plymouth Duster without her knowing. He bought car magazines and looked for ways he could make his car look different from one that he would see others driving. His “beer” was the movie nights with his family on the weekends he had free, a time they will never forget. He enjoyed watching anime with his boys and loved to spoil them with the latest video games and gaming systems. He loved taking them to the movie theaters and Go-kart racing when he could. Relaxing with his family as much as possible brought never ending joy to Andre.

As a young man growing up in Mattapan, he made a multitude of lifelong friends while living on Wellington Hill. While there he enjoyed DJing, beat making, and tuning cars. Andre was often called "Butta" while he was growing up. He liked the nickname and kept it. He then passed the Butta nickname down to his children Andre, Anton and their close friend Stephen, who he helped raise as his own. Starting with himself as “ButtaWun,” Andre Jr as “ButtaToo,” Anton “ButtaThree,” and Stephen “ButtaFor.” Andre was always down to get a bite to eat at P&R and Tabu’s on Blue Hill Ave. Andre used to help with the neighborhood cleaning in Mattapan on Saturdays. He was a very community-oriented person and was very outspoken when it came to politics. When it came to politics, if something didn’t look right to him, he was not afraid to speak up. His political views had everyone worked up often, but it was all out of love.

Closer to home, Andre found solace and happiness in his love for science, history, and learning. The history Chanel was a necessity while at home and his love for sharing what he learned and looking further into things was a daily occurrence. More than anything, he will always be known as a family man who loved being a father and a good son to his mother. He showed his boys what it means to help others. In agreement with his sons, he often gave away things to friends and neighbors. He showed them what it means to care for others.

In addition to his love of exploration, food and history, Andre enjoyed exploring the beauty of New England. Always out driving around with an adventurous spirit, getting food anywhere he heard was good. Andre enjoyed visiting Cherry Dip from Frosty Freeze since the early 90s and many places all over New England since then. Sometimes seeing things, he could not explain but always open for an adventure. A lover of seafood, he would take trips to Maine and enjoyed the scenic charm of Newport Rhode Island.

Nothing made Andre happier than being with his sons and his mother. He always set aside time to do things with them and was there whenever they needed him. He never put anything before his family and always made time that was meant just for them. Andre was a man that was there through it all - through laughter, tears, his sons’ graduations, first loves, and everything in-between. He was the one who helped keep things together. Andre was the one who was able to take the bad days and turn them into amazing nights. He was there to encourage his son’s sisters to push through high school and college. He always expressed how proud he is of his sons and their siblings. He was always the one to let them know they could achieve anything if they worked hard enough.

Andre Raphael Mitchell Sr. peacefully transitioned on May 18th, 2024, while being surrounded by his beloved family, after his courageous battle against cancer. He is survived by his mother, Christine Mitchell, his sons, Andre Raphael Mitchell Jr., and Anton Mitchell, his Brother Eric Mitchell, Uncle Darrell Washington, Uncle Marty Washington, his sons mother Monique Moody her children, Aniya, Iyana, Emmanuel, Stephen, and their dog Ollie, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and innumerable friends. He will be forever missed.
