Barbara Fitzpatrick Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Margaret Fitzpatrick was born on August 9, 1933 in Port of Spain, Trinidad went to be with the Lord, peacefully, in her sleep on October 9, 2020. She was married for 65 years to Oswald L. Fitzpatrick (aka, Fitzie). Her parents, Matthew and Mary Charles, and her only sibling, Courtney Charles, preceded her in death.

Barbara lost her father at the age of nine and soon after she began attending Greyfriars Presbyterian Church of Scotland with her mother, Mary, where her faith took root. She loved the Lord and cherished her private devotional times. Barbara and Fitzie migrated to the United States in beginning in 1968 and began a new life in Mattapan, Massachusetts. In 1970, their four daughters, Donna, Debra, Denise and Desiree joined them. Barbara joined the Historic Roxbury Presbyterian Church and there she was ordained an Elder. She later was also ordained a Deacon and she served in that call faithfully for decades. One of Barbara’s favorite events was the annual Deacons Rainbow Tea where she displayed her cooking and baking skills. Barbara believed in the power of prayer and her family believed that she prayed them all into the church and to a life of faith in God.

Barbara had many talents. She was a very talented seamstress. She made fashionable clothing for her daughters and decked out many-a-brides. She loved to sing calypso music and her stage name was “Lady Red Shirt.” When the family gathered, she was the life of the party. She was a gifted storyteller and the family  comedian. She was a great cook and described her gift of hospitality as her ministry. She didn’t know a stranger. Her kitchen table was home to many. Barbara created a home filled with joy, laughter, love and peace. Many would call her a peacemaker. “Blessed are the  peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”

Barbara’s family was front and center in her life. Oswald and Barbara  renewed their wedding vows on their 50th anniversary. One of the last celebrations she was able to enjoy was their 65th wedding anniversary on July 10, 2020. Her happiest day of the week was Sunday when after church, her offspring, her church family, and all of her “other” children would gather for Sunday dinner.

Surviving is her beloved husband, Oswald; four devoted daughters, Donna Fitzpatrick, Debra Fitzpatrick, Denise Seymour (Paul), Desiree Lawson (Anthony); grandchildren, Jefferson Cory Leon Johnson (deceased), Danielle McFarlane, Mekah McIntosh, Barbara & Lindsay Walcott, Trinity & Joseph Seymour; great-grandchildren, Jada & Jordan McFarlane, Anai & Ayomi Johnson-Alleyne and Elijah Seymour.
