Bernardina Vaz Goncalves, a devoted mother and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 87.
She was born on December 24, 1938, in Santiago, Cabo Verde, to the late Cesario Vaz Goncalves and Francisca DaCosta. Bernardina dedicated her life to her family, serving faithfully as a homemaker and nurturing those she loved with unwavering care, strength, and compassion. Her home was a place of warmth, guidance, and enduring love.
Bernardina leaves behind her beloved children: Maria Moniz, Maria Fortes, Ana Dias, and Dulce Fortes. She was a proud and loving grandmother to ten grandchildren, all of whom were a great source of joy in her life. She is also survived by a host of other loving relatives and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory and the moments they shared with her.
Her legacy of love, devotion, and quiet strength will continue to live on through her family and all whose lives she touched.
Services will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Church, located at 400 Dudley Street, Boston, MA.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM.
Interment will take place immediately following the Mass at New Calvary Cemetery, Boston, Massachusetts.
Bernardina will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. May she rest in eternal peace.
