Dougal Powell, affectionately known as "Lookah Bush," was born on April 4, 1938, in Hatfield, Manchester, Jamaica, to Hortense Williams and Stanford Powell. He was the eldest of 12 children: Merl (deceased), Maggy/Barbara, Daisy (deceased), Lue (deceased), David, Mordecai, Joseph, Josephine, Grace, Ruth (deceased), James (deceased), and an adopted sibling, Ernest.
Dougal spent much of his childhood with his father in Nain, St. Elizabeth, where he attended Nain Primary School, completing up to the sixth grade. Despite his limited formal education, he honed practical skills in carpentry and farming, enabling him to provide for his family. Carpentry was Dougal’s passion; he continuously refined his craft and became highly skilled in the trade. A firm believer in versatility, he adapted to various circumstances, seamlessly transitioning to farming whenever carpentry work slowed. Whatever the task, Dougal approached it with pride, professionalism, and unwavering dedication.
Dougal's life took a pivotal turn when he met Elva Jones. Together, they raised a large and loving family of 11 biological children: Kingsley, Sharon, Terry Ann, Glen, Pamela, Howard, Phillip, Clive, Heather, David, and Margret. Additionally, Dougal was a father to Maxine and Celina. Known for his integrity, faith, and boundless love for his family, Dougal became a pillar of strength and support, not only within his household but also in his community. His life was marked by humility, hard work, and consistent service to others.
Family was Dougal’s greatest source of pride. He cherished the moments shared with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In 2017, Dougal migrated to the United States due to declining health. Despite his challenges, he remained a beacon of gratitude, often expressing thanks with his signature phrase, "Thank God," always accompanied by a radiant smile and a twinkle in his eyes, even from his wheelchair. His favorite saying, "I'm blessed," would light up any room, leaving a lasting impression on all who met him.
As we reflect on Dougal’s remarkable life, we are reminded of the profound truth in the words: "When we lose someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind." Dougal’s love, wisdom, and legacy endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
