Harold "Pick" Donaldson Jr. Obituary

Harold Eugene Donaldson Jr., Entrepreneurial Mentor and Community Pillar, Dies at 89

Harold “Pick” Donaldson, a quietly steadfast figure whose entrepreneurial drive and fierce love for his community left an indelible mark on generations of Bostonians, died on May 3 in Newton, Massachusetts. He was 89.

Born on August 26, 1935, in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Mr. Donaldson built a life rooted in hustle, heritage, and service. The son of Pauline and Harold Donaldson Sr., he was the third of nine siblings and a product of a proud Black Boston lineage. His life’s work was as varied as it was grounded in purpose: he operated food trucks and concession stands across the city, including a beloved stand at Franklin Park Zoo, managed a Church’s Chicken, and served as head janitor at Needham High School. Later in life, he founded Detailer to the Stars, where he not only managed Zipcar’s Boston fleet but mentored young men in the art of car detailing—and in life.

Those mentorships often extended beyond skill-building. In the summers, he would bring young protégés with him to Martha’s Vineyard to service high-end clients’ vehicles, providing them a rare mix of income, training, and exposure to new experiences. “He gave us a trade and a sense of belonging,” said one former mentee. “That kind of teaching doesn’t come from books.”

Mr. Donaldson’s spiritual compass was shaped by Black nationalist values, cultural pride, and a deep reverence for history. While he wasn’t a man of public speeches, he was a consistent and trusted teacher to those closest to him, sharing stories, hard truths, and lessons about identity and dignity over kitchen tables and car hoods alike.

He was, to his family, “a watchman on the wall”—the vigilant protector who saw dangers ahead and offered guidance rooted in love and principle. Whether dissecting a horse’s pedigree as a passionate racing analyst, lovingly training Afghan Hounds, or simply sitting in a busy public square enjoying the art of people-watching, Mr. Donaldson lived with curiosity and care.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Harlean Donaldson, and by five siblings: Marilyn Chapman, Alice Donaldson Jackson, Beverly Cunningham, Adrienne Suttles, and Elinor Pyburn. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Donaldson; his son, Keith Donaldson; two daughters, Simone Donaldson and Joy Carlyle; four grandchildren, Emmanuelle Donaldson, Isaiah Donaldson, Sage Jones, and Michael Darden; and three siblings: Stephen Donaldson of Los Angeles, Yvonne Foust of North Carolina, and Michelle Freeman-Eden of Boston.

One of his favorite books was The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. A line he often returned to was: “Work is love made visible.” Through every job, lesson, and gesture, Pick made his love for his people visible, day after day, generation after generation.
