Johnnie Hobson Obituary

Johnnie G. Hobson was born on November 15, 1944, in Sawyerville, Alabama, to the late Mahalie (Jones) Hobson and the late Leo Hobson, Sr. He was raised in a close-knit family and carried those values of love, generosity, and loyalty with him throughout his life.

Affectionately called John by some and known to many as Hob, Johnnie enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sports—especially baseball and football. He had a deep love for Blues music. Quiet and reserved by nature, John possessed a loving and caring heart. He was a giver who never complained. If John had 25 cents and someone asked if he could spare some change, he would give 24 cents without hesitation. If someone needed food or a place to stay, John would open his heart and his home. He was truly a generous human being.

Johnnie graduated from Hale County Training School in Greensboro, Alabama. After graduation, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, with his childhood friend Bob Lewis. John lived in Dorchester for many years, where he was well known and well liked throughout the community. He was one of the first customers at Happy’s Market and developed lasting friendships with the owners and staff over the years.

John worked at MA Peacard Sheet Metal Manufacturing Company for many years, beginning his career there in 1965. He was a hardworking and dedicated employee. John remained with the company until it closed in 2013, at which time he chose to retire.

In his spare time, John enjoyed having an alcoholic beverage; however, in the 1980s, he made the decision to give it up. He loved playing the lottery and “shooting the breeze” with his buddies. John shared an unbreakable bond with Bob Lewis, MacArthur Williams, Columbus Rhodes, and Leo Rhodes—an undeniable brotherhood that lasted a lifetime. Although he resided in Massachusetts, his heart remained in Alabama, and he always looked forward to visiting his hometown.

Known for his signature hats, slender build, and charming personality, John was truly a sight for sore eyes. Although he never married, he was a father to three children. Beyond his own children, John played a significant and loving role in the lives of Trevell Brown, Shontae Brown, Keona Brown, and Ayanna Brown, who affectionately called him “Daddy John.” Their children lovingly called him “Pa Pa.”

John departed this life on December 21, 2025, surrounded by love, with his son Dushon and daughter Stacey by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Hobson, Sr. and Mahalie (Jones) Hobson; his sisters, Delia Ward and Ellen Melvin; and his brother, Leo Hobson, Jr.

John leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Dushon Stallings of Boston and John Banks of Alabama;  seven grandchildren of Alabama, his daughter, Stacey Haymon of Boston; granddaughter Tianna Hill of Boston; two great-grandchildren, Amari Mow and Isiah Mow of Boston; his sister-in-law, Lillian Hobson ; a niece Savannah Wynn  both of Alamba and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and extended family.

Johnnie Hobson’s kindness, generosity, and quiet strength will be remembered and treasured by all who knew and loved him.
