Jose DosReis, 84, of Dorchester, Massachusetts, made his journey home to heaven surrounded by his loving family on July 14, 2020.
Affectionately known as (“Didi”) and (“Joe”), he was born in the Island of Santiago, Cabo Verde, on May 1, 1936. He was one of twelve children and the third son of Viscensia DosReis and Antonio Garcia Gomes. Raised by his father and stepmother, he learned at a young age the importance of being a strong and devoted family man.
In 1954, he married the love of his love life, Maria (Lopes-Dasilva). Soon afterward, when his father-in-law, Joaquim Lopes-Dasilva, passed away, he also became a beloved father-figure as he stepped in to help raise his two sisters-in-law, Angela Gomes and the late Domingas L. Miranda.
Along with son Domingos (Mingo), he emigrated to the United States 1961 and reunited with his family. Not shy of hard work, he took on multiple jobs to provide a life for himself and his family. He retired from American Biltrite after thirty years of service.
All who knew him, will fondly remember him as a great, caring man--an unsung hero who led a humble, yet giving life. Jose was a doting family man who many endearingly claim as their surrogate dad. He was unselfishly willing to help anyone in need.
He will also be remembered for his joy of life. He especially appreciated spending quality time with his loved ones gardening, playing cards, fishing and dancing. As an avid accordion player, he loved Funana and kept the traditional music of Cabo Verde alive in the community by playing for family, friends and at local social events.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Maria T. DosReis, his son, Domingos DosReis, and daughter, Matilde (Mattie) DosReis. He was predeceased by his two sons Manuel and Antonio DosReis.
He is also survived, by his granddaughters, Marlise and Monee DosReis; siblings: Maria DosReis Semedo of Boston Ma, Gedio DosReis, of Portugal and Eugenia DosReis of Cabo Verde and countless nieces and nephews who loved and adored him in the U.S. and abroad.
