Joseph Davis Obituary

Joseph L. Davis, Sr. was born August 7th, 1936, to the late Seibert and Vivian Davis (Brown) in Bank Hall St. Michaels, Barbados, W.I. He lived 88 full and meaningful years.

Joseph was known as Joe/Louie/Granddaddy and many other nicknames but was affectionately called Louis by his loving and devoted wife Louise.

On March 6th, 2025, he passed away peacefully, in his own quiet way. He waited for just the right moment—when no one was looking—to make his exit, sparing his loved ones who surrounded him every day. He knew what his passing would mean to those who cherished him, and he carried that love with him until his very last breath.

Joseph graduated from the Robort Boys School in Barbados and later migrated to the United States in 1955 where he began seeking out jobs, immediately starting in Harvard Square with his uncle Edward. During this time, he met and married the love of his life Louise (Lodkey) with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage. Through this union they had 6 children: Keith, Pamela, Patricia, Joseph, Carolyn, and Marlena.

Joseph was a man of deep faith, resilience and character—He was spicy, blunt, honest, and always striving to be fair.

Joseph was a hard worker and had many jobs. One of the jobs he always spoke about was Columbia Belt. He went on to work at Polaroid and stayed and maintained that job as he became a tech engineer and retired in the early 1990’s. During his years of working, he was able to buy the houses he raised his children and grandchildren in. He took pride in his home, always keeping his lawn and house picture perfect along with his love of Cadillacs!

He loved having his friends over in the open garage while the weather permitted and in the living room on cold days. They would laugh, talk, argue, eat and drink until it was time for everyone to go home.

During his younger days he would go to the Almont Park to the field to watch Cricket. He would travel to Canada and New York as well. Joe cherished his Bajan roots and returned to Barbardos whenever he could. He would always bring back the latest Soca and Calypso songs. But his greatest joy was always his family. His joy was most evident when his grandkids and great-grandkids—especially "His Boys"— Xaviar and Ziare walked into the room. He treasured his birthdays and always looked

forward to celebrating them, especially the ones thrown by his granddaughter Eryckah.

Joe was a man of routines and simple pleasures—his favorite past time was watching family feud (Steve Harvey) every night without fail. Channel 7 had to be set by 7pm sharp! He watched channel 5 news, Inside Edition and Chronicle, his daily must-watches, usually alongside his wife, Louise. When it came to food, he had his favorites: seafood and Chinese food and of course his wife’s famous lima beans. But he wasn’t just someone who enjoyed a good meal—he cooked for his wife every day until he no longer could, a quiet act of devotion that spoke volumes about the man he was.

Joseph also enjoyed baking and shopping with his grandkids, often visiting places like Building 19, K&G, Roxie’s, Walmart and Baby Nat’s. He had a deep love for watches and took pride in his collection. Playing cards with his grandkids was a favorite pastime, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats with his skills and competitive spirit. Joe was a family man whose presence could not be ignored. Demanding yet fair, strong yet loving, he carried himself with great authority, a sharp wit, and a heart that always had room for those he cared about.

Joseph L. Davis, Sr., is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Louise Davis, his children Keith (Barbara), Pamela Smith, Joseph L. Davis, Jr. (Mary), Carolyn Davis-Van Allen, and Marlena Davis. His sister Shirley Smith of Dorchester. His Grandchildren: Kimm Davis, Alfonza Davis, Eryckah Yarbough (Eric), Chekeema Washington, Jason Davis (Sherica), India Davis, Stephon Holiday, Dasia Davis-Fleming, Michaela Davis, Daria Davis-Fleming, Zariyah Davis, Naiya Davis, and Michael Davis-Francis, and 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Joseph was preceded in death by his Aunt Vera Davis, sister Jean Davis, his daughter Patricia Davis, his only nephew Seibert Davis, and his first niece Barbara May-Smith.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lessons that will never be forgotten.
