Josie Mae Bonner Coleman was born on December 8,1947 to the late Joseph Bonner, Sr. and Ludie Bonner in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
She confessed Christ at an early age at Tenth Street Missionary Church in Tuscaloosa. She received her early education from the Tuscaloosa City School System and graduated from Druid High School in 1966. After leaving Tuscaloosa, Josie journeyed to the Northeastern US and made her home in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area, where she remained until she departed this earthly life on August 5, 2025. Josie met the love of her life, Johnie Coleman in 1971 and after a six-year courtship, they were married in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in November 1977. Their first home together was in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where they paid only $15 per week for a flat with a kitchenette. Josie worked at Gillette in South Boston and retired after 12 years of dedicated service.
Her love for flowers kept her working long after retirement, planting flowers around the house and helping Johnie with installing flower features for landscaping clients for more than 15 years. She loved tropical flowers, and her favorite flower was the canna lily. Josie was an exceptional cook and her friends and family members enjoyed many of her delicious meals such as chicken, fish, fried green tomatoes, collard greens, and pot pies. She was a masterful baker and baked cakes and sweet treats for friends and family, including her famously delicious caramel cake. Josie was known for her collection of beautiful hats and often wore elaborate, jeweled headpieces. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Josie leaves to cherish her memories: Johnie Coleman, her loving husband of 48 years; her stepson, Stacey Coleman; her siblings: Mary Montgomery, Fayetteville, GA; Delores (Fred) Wilson, Warner Robins, GA; Joseph Bonner, Jr., Houston, TX; Mason Bonner(Jan Rita) Tuscaloosa, AL; and Rosa (Joseph) Binion, Tuscaloosa, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, other relatives and friends.
