Leon Augustus Lawton Sr. was born on December 1, 1941, in Norfolk County, Virginia and departed this life on November 2, 2023, at home. He was the fourth child of Clarence Augustus and Rhoda Irene Freeman Lawton. Leon is preceded in death by his parents, Three sisters: Blairlee Lawton (2021), Claracine Hardy (2014), Juanita Dawson (2013): Three brothers Tyrone Lawton (2020), Waddell Lawton (1991), Dr. Linwood Lawton (2023); and Grandson Deandre Lawton (2013).
Leon attended George Washington Carver High School in Norfolk County. After high school Leon migrated to Boston, Massachusetts to live with his sisters Clara and Blair in the late 1950's. Then Leon began working as a taxi driver obtaining his hackney license, working for the city of Boston for four years. He quickly learned the best routes to get where every you needed to be. Then in 1963 Leon met Jackie Cater and after a few years of courting they married on November 20, 1965, and had four children. Leon was 24 years old, and Jackie was 19. After giving up his hackney license Leon began working for King Metal Arts doing sheet metal works and roofing. He stayed there for two years and soon left to start his own business Lawton Sheet Metal Works in the 70's. Jackie was his secretary and managed the books and paid the employees. Leon loved building, that was his passion in life. He loved cooking for his family, especially frying blue crabs and doing work around the house. Leon loved spending time with his family. For fun, Leon had a niche for playing the Lottery and he never missed a day. He kept working up until the time he became ill.
He leaves to cherish his devoted wife Jacqueline Lawton of 58 years, and his children James Lawton (Renee), Leon Lawton Jr., Tracy Lawton-Jones (Herbert Jr.) and Rhoda Lawton (Peter).
Leon also leaves behind a host of beloved 2 great-grandchildren, 11 grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
