Leontine Swain Obituary

Leontine “Tina” Swain, affectionately known as “Nina” was the beloved matriarch of our family. She passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024, while surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by her three sisters, Edwina Bodley, Nettie Mae Lowe and Barbara Bodley. Mother-in-law Lola Speller and father-in-law George Washington Swain. Brother-in-law George Jr. Swain, Jean David Swain, William McCoy Speller. Her son, Claude. Son-in-law Gregory Rowell Sr and her grandchildren, Queen Love Rowell, Alonzo Polk IV and Sean McKoy.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 19, 1948, Tina was the daughter of the late Eula Mae Bodley and Milton Calhoun. Tina left her home in Birmingham, Alabama, and moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to lay the foundation for a better life and greater opportunities for her family. She worked at a bank as a teller and a housekeeper at the Ramada Inn to provide for her family. Later in life she met her late husband, Roy Roger Swain. Together they blended their families and went on to build a true love that would stand the test of time.

Tina was the heart of our family — strong, outspoken, and fearless. She was confident in who she was, remained true to herself, and spoke her truth unapologetically. She had a sharp tongue and didn't take any mess from anybody. Tina had a very strong and vibrant personality. There was never a dull moment in her presence. Her laughter, smile, jokes, and infectious spirit could brighten any room. Her charm and humor had a way of bringing happiness to those around her, and she always managed to see the positive in any situation. She uplifted everyone, embracing their flaws with love and support. Her home was a haven — a place where all were welcomed, fed, and treated like family. For Tina, family, friendship, and unity were sacred, and she devoted her life to nurturing those values. Tina loved to dance, cook, and throw unforgettable parties. Her gatherings were filled with joy, laughter, and love, bringing together family and friends to celebrate life. She had a special bond with her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family, each relationship marked by a unique nickname — Poe Bone, Playa Playa, Rabbit, Professor, Poe Rosie, Ham Sandwich, Curly Joe, Tea Tea, Pooh, and Spook — just to name a few.

Her impact on those around her was immeasurable. Tina was well-respected and touched the lives of so many, leaving memories and bonds that words cannot fully capture. Her selflessness and unwavering kindness were unmatched, and her legacy will live on through the love and strength she instilled in all of us. Though she has left this world, Tina’s spirit will remain with us always. She will be deeply missed, but her love, laughter, and light will live on in our hearts forever.

She is survived by her beloved children, Debra Rowell, Marlanea Drane, Frederick Drane and Leroy Drane of Massachusetts. Veronica (Michael) McKoy, Beverly (James) Wesson and Sherrie (Marcus) Oneal of North Carolina. Her brother, Johnny Bodley of Alabama, sisters-in-law Shirley (Alphonso) Safford of Massachusetts, Della Swain of Maryland and Valerie Speller of North Carolina. Tina is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Tina’s determination and sacrifices created a lasting legacy that will forever shape our family. Her legacy will never be forgotten, and the foundation she built will continue to carry us forward.
