Lillie Mae Hailstock (Lyon) was born on May 25, 1933, in Durham, NC to Alphonso and Mozell (Milligan) Lyon. She departed this life on November 4, 2024
Deacon Hailstock joined Union Chapel Baptist Church at age 12 and was baptized by Pastor Norman Trice. In the years to follow, Deacon Hailstock would move away, living between New Jersey and Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1951, she migrated to New Jersey where she raised her family. In the 1960's, she and her son, Michael joined New Fellowship Baptist Church under Rev. E.O Braxter where she taught Sunday School and was president of the Young Matrons Missionary Circle.
She moved from NJ and settled in Boston permanently in 1984, where she joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church under the Pastorate of Rev. Dr. Boykin Sanders where her mother was a faithful member for many years. She was consecrated as a Deaconess in 1995 under Pastor Demetrious K. Williams. She served in many capacities from 1985 through 2002 under three pastors (Rev. Sanders, Rev. Williams, Rev. Miniard Culpepper). In addition to being a Deaconess, she served on the Senior Usher Board, Junior Usher’s Supervisor, Mission Circle, Co-Chair of Women's Fellowship Ministry, assistant teacher in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, member of the Seniors’ Ministry and the Pulpit Committee.
Sister Hailstock joined Metropolitan Baptist Church (MBC) under the Reverend Doctor John H. Womack, in December of 2003. At Metropolitan she served as a deaconess, and in 2008 she was the first woman ordained as a Deacon at MBC. She also served as chair of the Pastor's Aide Committee, and was actively involved in the Senior's, Sunday School, Missionaries, and Women's Fellowship Ministries. She was rewarded with spiritual enrichment and fulfillment as a servant/leader in the church.
Deacon Hailstock worked for many years at United Airlines at Boston, Newark, and Kennedy airports. After taking early retirement from United Airlines, she worked 12 years for American Express Corporate Travel in Waltham, Westwood, and Boston before retiring again in 1997.
Deacon Hailstock also served faithfully with the National Association of Church Ushers Union; President Emerita of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Deacons' Union of Greater Boston (now known as The Massachusetts Baptist Deacon & Deaconess Association),Life member of the National Baptist Deacons Convention of America, Inc. and its Auxiliaries; Chair of Personal Development Ministries in The Southwest branch of American Baptist Women's Ministries (ABW), Honorary Member of the Mt. Olive Temple of Christ Missionary Circle established by the late Susie Thomas.
Deacon Lillie Hailstock was preceded in death by her parents, Alphonse and Mozella Lyon, one brother, Ivory L. Lyons, Sr., her husband, Harold Hailstock and her son, Michael Hailstock. She leaves her two nephews Ivory L. Lyons, Jr. (Barbara) and Paul G. Lyons, Sr (Yolandia) and one granddaughter, Dionnee in New York City along with a host of relatives and friends.
