Maggie Lorraine Tubbs was born on January 31, 1938, in Meridian, Mississippi, to the late Robert and Everlena Clay. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, laying the foundation for a lifelong journey of faith.
In the late 1960s, Maggie relocated to Boston, where she built a life centered on family, faith, and community. Maggie Lorraine Tubbs was a devoted member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, carrying her beliefs with quiet strength and grace throughout her life. She also dedicated over 25 years of service as a nurse assistant at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged, where she provided compassionate care and support to those she served.
For more than 35 years, Maggie was a respected and beloved presence in her community. She was known for her warmth, kindness, and the genuine connections she formed with those around her. Her presence brought comfort, and her spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Maggie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved going to movies, listening to Rhythm and Blues, and sharing that love of music with her family. She had a special talent for creating a welcoming home, especially during the holidays. Whether decorating or preparing meals, she brought warmth, beauty, and togetherness into every space. Seafood was always among her favorites and never turned down.
Above all, Maggie was devoted to her family. She was known as the ultimate hostess, bringing loved ones together for Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Fourth of July celebrations. She took pride in planning, cooking, and welcoming everyone with open arms, finding her greatest joy in togetherness.
Her love for her children and grandchildren was unwavering. In her later years, her son Michael became her dedicated caregiver, providing her with comfort and support. Maggie also shared a special bond with her granddaughter Skyla, whom she lovingly raised after the passing of her son Edward. Their relationship grew into one that reflected the depth of a mother and daughter. Her only daughter-in-law, Yolanda, affectionately known as “Missy,” was her constant source of support and someone Maggie could always depend on. She also had a bonus son, Jerry Duncan, who was there for her in every sense of the word, consistently checking on her and making sure she had everything she needed and wanted.
Maggie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Everlena Clay; her husband, Robert Lewis; her son, Edward Clay; her grandparents, Burrell and Maggie Brown; her sisters, Annie Clay and Mary E. Bradshaw; and her brothers, Robert, Eddie, Charlie, Willie, Henry, and Earlie Clay.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children Michael Clay of Boston, Annette Price of Mississippi, Linda Clay of Boston, Sandra Clay of Boston, and Johnny Tubbs (Yolanda Tubbs); her sister Gladys Burke of Mississippi; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and a host of relatives and dear friends who will continue to honor her legacy of love and strength.
