Manuel Lopes Obituary

Manuel João Lopes, 94, of Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family, on February 22, 2026.

Manuel was born on May 22, 1931, in Fogo, Cape Verde, to the late João J. Lopes and Zulmira R. Lopes. Raised with strong values of faith, resilience, and devotion to family, he carried the spirit of his homeland with him throughout his life.

Affectionately known as “Nelinho,” Manuel was a devoted loving husband to his beloved wife, Amelia Lopes.

He was a proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was a man of quiet wisdom and steady strength. His presence was grounding, his words were thoughtful, and his love for his family was unwavering. He believed deeply in hard work, loyalty, and the importance of staying connected to those you love.

One of his greatest joys was riding his motorcycle. He loved the feeling of freedom on the open road — the wind against his face and the peaceful clarity that came with the journey. It reflected who he was: strong, adventurous, independent, yet always returning home to the people who mattered most.

He was predeceased by his beloved son, Pedrinho.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Amelia Lopes; his loving children: Nenezinha, Nela, Mia, Maria Amelia, Maria Antonia, Nelita, Evelise, Maria Socorro, Ze “Futre,” Mane, João Manuel, Nelo, João Paulo, Arnaldo, Ze, Djedje, and Pedro; 47 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and dear friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

Whether sharing stories from his youth in Fogo, offering gentle advice, or sitting in peaceful silence beside those he loved, Manuel made everyone feel safe and valued. His legacy lives on through the generations he raised, guided, and inspired.
