Maurice Leon

Maurice Leon was born in Corail, Haiti, on August 7, 1939, to Fortus Leon and Clemente Leon. He was one of their 14 children. From an early age, Maurice valued education and became a teacher in Haiti, a profession that reflected his lifelong love of learning and knowledge. And it was in this same profession, he met a fellow teacher, Adrienne Marie Louis. In 1969, they would marry and later on have three children.

In 1975, Maurice immigrated to the United States with his wife and children in search of greater opportunities for his family. Their first home was a large house shared with our Adrienne’s cousins, the Fontaine family. Those days were filled with great joy and laughter. Although having little, he felt rich in love, surrounded by family. Later, the family moved into a home on Degraw Street in Brooklyn, where many great memories were made.

Maurice was a hardworking man who never stopped learning. Some of the fondest memories are of seeing him reading the newspaper each day or listening intently to the news. He had a deep appreciation for history and current events. Every Sunday, he faithfully watched programs such as 20/20 with Hugh Downs, 60 Minutes, and The World at War. Yet, alongside his love for history, he also enjoyed lighter moments, watching The Donny & Marie Show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, and The Lawrence Welk Show.

Weekends were especially memorable. Adrienne would prepare delicious Haitian meals while Maurice welcomed friends into their Brooklyn apartment. They would spend hours laughing together, playing cards and dominoes, filling the home with warmth, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

Despite building a new life in America, Maurice's heart always remained connected to Haiti. For years he would return to visit the family he loved so dearly. His daughters said they would cry each time he left, afraid he might never return. But he did, bringing back stories, love, and the reassurance that family could never be separated by distance alone.

Maurice never stopped dreaming. After coming to the United States, he continued attending school because he dreamed of becoming an electrical engineer. His determination to continue learning was inspiring and demonstrated that it is never too late to pursue new goals.

Eventually, the family moved to Queens, New York, where life continued until a tragic accident forever changed his life. From that moment forward, things were never quite the same. His health steadily declined, bringing many challenges. Through it all, Adrienne worked tirelessly to provide stability, love, and dignity for the family, doing everything she could to make life feel as normal as possible despite the hardships they faced together.

One of the greatest blessings in Maurice’s life was establishing a relationship with God together with his family. Maurice studied with Jehovah's Witnesses for many years. He attended the Kingdom Hall and even participated in the theocratic school, receiving assignments for bible readings. Those moments, among others for his family, remain treasured memories.

Maurice often spoke with pride about his beloved eldest son, Dr. Evens Leon. He would say that Evens was going to become "a big man.". And his words came true. Dr. Evens Leon has built a beautiful life with his wife and their two daughters. The rest of the family has said they look forward to getting to know them better, honoring the legacy of the man whose love made all of this possible through the grace and mercy of Jehovah God.

As Eccl. 9:11 says, time and unexpected events separated many of us, and precious years together have been lost. It is with sincere hope that Maurice’s passing may, in some small way, help reunite his family and strengthen the bonds that remain. For Maurice deeply loved his brothers, sisters and extended family. We honor his memory by reaching out to those he cherished, including Leone, Roger, and Claude Leon, remembering the love he had for each of them and the importance he placed on family.

As we reflect on the memories shared, we are comforted knowing that Maurice loved his family deeply. Although he now rests in death, we have complete confidence that he remains in Jehovah God's perfect memory.

The hope from the Bible in John 5:28, 29 and Revelation 21:4 continues to be comforting today. It gives us confidence that one day we will see Maurice again—healthy, joyful, at peace, and reunited with his wife, children, parents, his siblings, and all who loved him so deeply.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to celebrate Maurice's life during a Memorial Service on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at George Lopes Funeral Home, 647 Main Street, Brockton, MA 02301.
