Born on June 15, 1987, in Boston, MA to Stephen Martin and Michelle Finch, the name Javon Martin Finch was given. In her teen years, she transitioned into the legend known as Mya Martin Finch. She departed this life on October 24, 2023, after a brief illness.
Affectionately called Nookie by family and friends, she grew up in the Bromley-Heath housing development. She was defined by her realness, loving nature, and big heart. Mya was always loved, respected, protected, accepted, and cared for. She normalized acceptance in our community. Mya had an unbreakable bond with her mother. They were inseparable.
Mya was educated in the Boston Public School system. While she was bright in school, her passion was hair and fashion. Her aspirations were larger than what Boston could offer so she moved on to New York. She spent several years there where she was known for her hustle, ambition, and beauty. Mya loved to travel. You never knew where she’d end up. She loved music and dancing, but she was known for vogue.
In the time that we were blessed with Mya, she left her mark. She was a proud member of LGBTQIA+ community where she was well known for her beauty, talent, and leadership. She was a light for many during their most difficult times. When others struggled, she was a safe space and a gentle guide through the storm. She was fiercely protective of her family and friends.
Mya was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother; Virginia Finch; great-grandmother; Mary Lackland; brother, Adrian Martin; and uncle, Lorenzo Finch.
Mya leaves to cherish her memory her parents; Michelle Finch and Stephen Martin; siblings, Stephen Rainey-Martin, Kenneth Martin, Tyler Martin and Benjamin Tate; grandparents, Faye White, Stephen and Paula Martin; great-grandmother, Julia Martin; nieces, Miracle Martin and E'asia Tate; nephews, Stephen Rainey-Martin, Adrian Rainey-Martin, and Iverson Rainey-Martin; her aunts, Dorothy Robinson Cotton, Patricia Coaston, Eileen Finch, Lisa Cinelli, and Stephanie Pineyro-Martin; and uncles, Joseph Robinson, Calvin Finch, Terry Finch, Kenneth Hines, Roy Martin, Geno Martin, William Martin, Joe Martin, and Jordan Andrews; godmothers; Veronica Furrowh, Gladys Pearson and Sherrice Williams; godfather, Robert Loving; godchildren, Ari Malone and Chanisha Rodriquez.
