Noel Elizabeth Johnson, lovingly known as Nora, was born on February 2, 1950, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Cley Otis Johnson and Cora Lee Kendrick Price. She entered eternal rest on May 19, 2026, in Holbrook, Massachusetts.
Nora centered her life around love, service, family, education, and faith. She gave generously to her family, her community, her clients, her colleagues, and especially to her daughter Mia and her grandsons, Chase and Jonas.
Nora was educated in Boston and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Boston State College and her Master of Social Work from Simmons College, where she also began doctoral studies. For Nora, education represented opportunity, independence, and the freedom to choose one’s own path.
Her life’s work reflected her deep commitment to helping others. Nora began her career at Catholic Charities and later served at Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center, Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center, and Lemuel Shattuck Hospital. After more than 30 years with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, she retired as Director of Social Work Services. Her professional contributions were significant, but she valued her roles as mother, Nonnie, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend most.
After retiring, Nora cherished being Nonnie to Chase and Jonas. She was present for milestones big and small, offering encouragement, wisdom, and steady love. She helped Chase learn his commute to school and supported Jonas’s love of reading through regular trips to the library. Her grandsons brought her tremendous joy.
Nora showed her love through action. She encouraged others to pray, advocate for themselves, pay bills on time, value education, and pay close attention to character. Her advice was honest, practical, and always rooted in love.
Nora loved jazz, dancing, cooking, and being with family. She collected cookbooks, clipped recipes from magazines, enjoyed trying new dishes, and brought music, laughter, warmth, and sharp wisdom to those around her.
Nora was preceded in death by her mother, Cora; her father, Otis; and several beloved siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Mia K. Cox-Johnson, and Mia’s partner, Encerah John Morant; her grandsons, Encerah Algar Chase Morant and Jonas Dean Morant; her brothers Danny Joe Johnson, Tyrone Johnson, and Boyd Price; her sisters Carolyn Price and Tina Gadson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives she touched.
