Wilbert Garrett Obituary

It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of our dearest friend, brother, father figure and close confidant Mr. Wilbert Garrett.

Affectionately known to us all as Will, Brother Wilbert, Unc and nicknamed here at the funeral home as our "Donu" meaning grandfather.

Wilbert Garrett passed peacefully at home on August 9, 2022.

Born to Mattie (Garrett) King in Columbia, South Carolina. He leaves his mother, his children, grand children, brothers and sisters along with a host of other relatives and dear friends to cherish his memories. Brother Wilbert was also an active member and trainer at the Muhammad's Mosque #11 in Dorchester, MA.

OBITUARY

Born on July 16, 1948, in Columbia, South Carolina, the first child born to Mattie Garrett King.  He gained his wings on August 9, 2022, peacefully at home.

His family relocated from South Carolina to Philadelphia, and he graduated from Westside High School in Newark, New Jersey. Several years later he moved to Boston and further developed a special relationship with his Granny, Ada Fulks.

He spent many years employed by George Lopes Funeral Home. He loved working with his Godson George Lopes Sr. and all the staff at the funeral home because they were his dear friends. He was affectionately known as Will, Brother Wilbert, Unc and nicknamed at the funeral home as “Donu” meaning grandfather. He received accolades on the Lopes website for the compassionate and sensitive attitude he displayed to bereaved families.

He became a member of the Nation of Islam at a young age under Elijah Muhammad.   He served with the Fruit of Islam (FOI) performing security for Minister Louis Farrakhan and traveled to Chicago to serve with him for many years.  He would often speak kind words about Minister Don Muhammad.  You could always find Wilbert on Blue Hill Avenue selling the newspaper “Final Call.”  He was an active member and trainer at the Muhammad’s Mosque #11 in Dorchester, MA.

Will had hundreds of friends. Anytime you were with him, he would meet and greet somebody he knew.  He was a loving, caring, handsome man with a heart of gold BUT without a doubt he could start disagreements. He loved being called Grandpa by his grandchildren. He was delighted when school ended in June so he could spend precious time with his nine grandchildren in Boston during the summer months. Wilbert loved fishing and could always find a new fishing hole.

Wilbert was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ada Fulks; sister, Sylvia Doreen Washington; daughter, Maryann Brite-Peters (Gully); aunts, Barbara Louis, Miriam Garrett and uncles Wilbert Garrett and Herbert Bracy.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved mother Mattie Garrett King, his three cherished sons, Terence Wilbert, Deonte Curry Sr, Hasan Taft and loving Godson George Lopes Sr. Blessed to have seventeen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren located in Boston, New Jersey and Atlanta; loving sister Barrie Merrick; caring brothers, Quincy King and Michael King; one aunt Carolyn Griffin; uncles Paul (Mary) Fulks, John (Elsa) Jackson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loving relatives and friends.
