Willie James Murphy, beloved father, grandfather, friend, and world traveler, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, at 83. Born on November 24, 1941, in Rocky Point, North Carolina, Willie was the cherished son of Joseph Ernest William and Christina Murphy
Known affectionately to many as “Murph”, Willie’s vibrant spirit and infectious, boisterous laugh were truly larger than life, only surpassed by the size of his heart. He never met a stranger, greeting everyone with warmth and kindness that made them feel instantly at home. Known for his impeccable fashion sense, Willie took pride in being the best dressed, often sporting perfectly coordinated outfits complete with matching socks and signature glasses or sunglasses. Willie also had a deep love for plants and a natural talent for staying fit. He had a tremendous gift for sharing, whether it was food or a bit of wisdom, he gave freely and generously, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Willie built a long and dedicated career with American Airlines, where he worked for many years as a Skycap before retiring. Never one to stay still, he used his well-earned retiree airline benefits to travel the world—one of his greatest passions. Whether solo, with friends, or with family, he enjoyed experiencing new places, making friends everywhere he went.
In addition to his career in aviation, Willie spent the past 20 years working at The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Boston, where he became an integral part of the community. To his coworkers and the residents, he served, Willie was more than a colleague—he was a trusted friend, a steady presence, and a cherished member of their extended family.
He is survived by his devoted children: Katondra Murphy, Cheryl Brown (Darrell), and Taj Washington; his wife, Malinda Bethea Murphy; his grandchildren: Marqui Murphy, Tia Shorter (Jason), Shayla Murphy, Andrew Watson, and Andre Watson; and his siblings: the late James Rudolph Murphy, Mary Brown, Thomas Gonzalez, Judy Baker, Russell Lewis, Jacqueline Murphy, Della Warren, McNeil Patrick, Carlton Patrick, Althea Lewis, and Delores Kaham. Willie’s legacy also lives on through his great-grandchildren and the countless family members and friends whose lives he touched through his warmth, thoughtful advice, and humor.
Funeral services will be private, in accordance with his family’s wishes. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Willie Murphy Memorial Fund, established to help cover funeral and estate-related expenses.
Willie will be remembered not only for his tireless work ethic and his love of travel but for his kind spirit, generous heart, and the quiet strength that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
